One Group, Then Two: The Multiplication Math That Gets You Past 100

You have worked hard to get here. Maybe you are knocking on 100, or you have crossed it and you can feel a new kind of tension: the room is full, the calendar is tight, and yet growth has quietly stalled. You keep adding people, but you never seem to get ahead.
Here is the honest truth many of us learn the hard way. A church that only adds will eventually re-plateau. Addition alone runs headlong into the single-cell and span-of-care ceilings that stop most churches cold. The structural way through is not to get bigger. It is to birth something new.
As the old ministry saying goes, nothing grows a church faster than starting something new. A new group. A new service. A new campus. A new church. Let's talk about the math that makes that true, and how to take the very next step.
The math that changes everything
Addition and multiplication feel similar, but they behave completely differently over time. Watch what multiplication does: one becomes six, six becomes thirty-six, thirty-six becomes 216, 216 becomes 1,296. Addition creeps. Multiplication compounds.
The research backs this up in ways that should encourage every small-church pastor. A new work's first five years grow around 170% faster than its later years. People in churches under five years old are 31% more likely to invite others to consider faith and 52% more likely to share their faith than at any other point in a church's life.
New works are also cheaper to grow. The median start-up cost is about $460 per first-year attender, compared to $1,667 per attender in ongoing annual cost at churches over five years old. And newer, smaller works engage people more deeply: single-site churches drew 53% more regular volunteers than multisite campuses, because the smaller the group, the greater the percentage who get involved.
So the most fruitful growth lever for an under-100 church is not becoming a megachurch. It is starting something.
Where most churches get stuck
Exponential describes five levels of multiplication: Subtracting, Plateaued, Adding, Reproducing, and Multiplying. Roughly 80 to 90% of U.S. churches are stuck at Levels 1 and 2. Fewer than 4% ever reach Level 4, where they actually reproduce. That means the crowded field you feel yourself competing in is mostly full of churches that only add. Choosing to multiply sets you apart.
The one catch: multiplication won't fix a sick church
Before you launch anything, hear this. Multiplication will not turn around a sick or dying church. It extends a healthy one. Readiness is the gate, not enthusiasm.
If you are considering a campus later on, the thresholds are clear: you should be growing at least 5% per year with your facility 80% full at optimal hours before you attempt it. A launch core of at least 75 (ideally 100 or more) and one paid staff member per 100 attenders are part of that picture too. For most under-100 churches, campuses come later. Your near-term move is multiplying groups and services, then eventually a plant.

Think of your options as a decision tree, sequenced cheapest first: group, then service, then campus, then plant.
Start a new group or a new service before you attempt anything larger. New groups reach new people. Closed, aging groups tend to repel them. A newcomer often feels uncomfortable squeezing into an established circle, but a brand new group welcomes them as a founding member. This is the least expensive, lowest-risk multiplication you can make, and it directly feeds your path through the 100 Strong /milestones.
Build multiplication into the culture early
Healthy new works decide to multiply long before they have to. Among new works studied, 74% carry a future-multiplication vision and 60% intentionally multiply their group leaders. Notice the pattern: they talk about multiplication early, openly, and often.
Don't wait until you are bursting at the seams to mention starting something new. Name it now, from the pulpit and in your leaders' meetings, so that when the moment comes, no one is surprised.
When it's time to plant, count leaders, not dollars
Here is a freeing reframe. Planting readiness is measured by leader supply, not by money. The real question is whether you are training elders and co-pastors fast enough to keep up with growth, and whether you have identified someone with an apostolic, sent-one gift.
There is no financial minimum. In fact, it costs less to start the kind of church that multiplies than to prop up a sterile traditional one. Fund your new work from fruit, not from a bank balance. As the movement people put it, the resources are in the harvest.
When you do plant, run the five phases with reproduction in mind from day one: Conception, Gestation, Birth, Maturity, and Multiplication. Design the plant to reproduce, not merely to survive.
Don't do it alone
Multiplication grows even faster inside a network. When pastors covenant together, each committing to plant one church a year, isolated effort becomes a movement. The vision becomes a church in every village. If you can find or form a network like this, you turn your single next step into part of something much larger.
What to do next
Start where you are. Confirm your church's health. Then make the cheapest multiplication move available to you, which for most under-100 churches is a new group or a new service. Talk about multiplication openly with your leaders so the culture forms before the crisis does. And begin praying now about the leaders God is raising up, because leader supply, not money, is your real gate to planting.
