The 40-Day Prayer Experiment That Measurably Grows Churches

If you pastor a church under 100, you have probably felt the tension. There is so much to do and so little time and money to do it. You look at bigger churches with their staff and budgets and wonder what lever you could possibly pull that they have and you do not.
Here is the good news, and it is backed by real data: the single highest-correlation growth factor we have measured costs nothing. It requires no budget, no building upgrade, and no polished program. It is prayer. And there is a 40-day pathway that turns that conviction into a concrete, congregation-wide experiment you can launch this month.
The one lever with a measured link to growth
Jim Egli studied more than 3,000 group leaders. The finding should reorder how we spend our week. The leader's prayer life had the highest correlation to group health and growth. Meanwhile, time spent on lesson prep had zero correlation with growth.
Read that again if you are a bivocational pastor squeezing sermon prep into late nights. The thing that mattered most in the data was not preparation. It was prayer.
And the fruit is not abstract. Among leaders with a strong prayer life, 83% saw someone come to Christ. Among leaders with a weak prayer life, only 19% did. That is roughly four times the evangelistic fruit, traced directly to the leader's prayer life. This is the cheapest and most powerful move a tiny church can make.
Why prayer launches a turnaround
Prayer is not an add-on to church health. In the EFCC Core Four organic-health building blocks, "Pervasive Prayer" sits right alongside biblical teaching, worship, and healthy relationships. It is a mark of a healthy church and a first move of every new and renewed work: Phase I of the church-planting cycle and the recommended way to launch a revitalization before any program changes.
That last point matters for anyone tempted to start their turnaround with a new service style or a new logo. The counsel here is simple. Before you change programs, launch with prayer. That is where the 40-day experiment comes in.
The 40-day "Praying With Jesus" experiment
The pathway is a 40-day revitalization prayer journal built around seven dimensions. Each day gives you Scripture to read, a reflection, and a scripted surrender prayer. It is designed to be prayed by the whole congregation together, front-loading your turnaround with the one thing the data says moves the needle.
The seven dimensions walk a church through a full renewal of its prayer posture:
- Searching My Heart
- Rebuilding Trust in the Word
- Honoring Christ's Lordship
- Resolving Differences
- Following Kingdom Leaders
- Re-Establishing Jesus' Priorities
- Awaiting Transformation
Notice the order. It starts with the pastor's and members' own hearts, moves through trust and unity, and ends in expectant waiting. It is not a request list. It is a 40-day realignment of the whole body around the Lord of the church.

As you run the experiment, teach your people to pray the way Daniel Henderson describes it: "Scripture-fed, Spirit-led, worship-based." Instead of jumping straight to a list of needs, begin in God's character and Word before you bring petitions.
Two simple patterns help here: the 2/2 pattern for personal prayer and the 4/4 pattern for corporate prayer. Build a 4/4 prayer guide from two or three Scriptures with a couple of prompts for each section. This keeps your gatherings anchored in worship rather than sliding into a running tally of problems.
Beginners in your congregation will appreciate simple frameworks too. The ACTS model (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) and the PRAY model (Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield) give new believers an easy on-ramp.
Turn the experiment into a lasting rhythm
Forty days will spark something. To keep it, set a prayer "plumb line": explicit, committed prayer rhythms at four cadences, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual, both for you personally and for the congregation. When prayer is scheduled rather than merely hoped for, it becomes what the Core Four calls "pervasive": modeled by leaders, public, intergenerational, and embedded in every gathering.
A few concrete practices to carry forward:
- Pray for the lost by name. Have every member build a FRAN list (Friends, Relatives, Associates, Neighbors) and a personal "Top 5" of unbelievers, prayed for daily and lifted as a community.
- Prayer-walk your community. Define your church's "place," map where people gather, name the not-yet-believers there, and plan two or three walkable routes.
- Schedule extraordinary prayer for any multiplying push. A weekly multi-hour team prayer block is element number one of every church-planting movement. Put it on the calendar before the strategy.
Where this fits your milestone
On the way to 25, the highest-leverage, zero-cost move is your own daily prayer plus a weekly gathering of your core to pray for named lost people, along with those first FRAN and Top 5 lists. On the way to 50, set the church-wide plumb line and make prayer worship-based with the 2/2 or 4/4 pattern. On the way to 75, prayer-walk the neighborhood and coach every group leader to pray over their group and their lost friends, because that leader's prayer life is the very driver Egli measured.
If you want help seeing where your church sits and what to work on next, the /assessment and /milestones tools are built for exactly this.
Your challenge this week
Start the 40-day "Praying With Jesus" journal yourself, beginning with Day 1: Searching My Heart. Do not wait to organize the whole congregation. Pray the first day this week, and by Sunday invite your core group to begin it with you. Launch your turnaround the way every renewed work begins: with prayer first.
